EnglishBolita is a bit of trouble at the moment becouse she is in a transition period of weaning, and she needs to start accepting solid food soon. Becouse we know so little about raising giant anteaters at the park I contacted two zoos which have raised several giant anteaters and got a very usefull and informative reply from vets at both zoos. The main advises are the following:
* Bolita's diet can consist of a
paste or pulp of soaked dog- or catfood pellets, you can also try canned dog- or catfood. (This is the most important ingredient of her diet since it mimics the natural foodsource of ants and termites the most.) Besides this you can also give yoghurt, oats, hardboiled eggs, fruits like banana or papaya. This we already knew more or less. In one zoo they feed the Insectivore dry diet of Mazuri soaked in water to a paste, but I doubt we can find that in Bolivia.
* To make the food into a paste which is easy for Bolita to eat, it would be good if the park can buy
a blender, is it a good idea to buy this from Osito's first winnings from the shop?
* We have a problem getting Bolita to accept her food (at least 2 weeks ago it was like that), any food at all, she doesn't accept the bottle much anymore and doesn't know how to eat solid food yet... So you can try
presenting the food in another way: put pulped food in a hollow branch, Bolita always likes to eat ants that way. Also other presentations that represent a situation in which she has to put her nose or tongue inside something (take the top of the bottle/ put food in plastic bag....improvise!)
* To treat giant anteaters in the zoos they give them
avocados, maybe Bolita likes them too? Not more than once a week I was told.
* In the zoos they start to give solid food at the age of 4 months, Bolita is already 8 months. Between 6-9 months they should be fully weaned. Just to show it's
very important Bolita starts eating solid food soon!!* To monitor Bolita's progression it is very important to
weigh her regularly, for example on a weekly basis and keep a record of this in the diary. Maybe this is possible on the scales in the animal kitchen?
At birth giant anteaters weigh 1,3 kg, adults can weigh up to 39 kg, males more than females. The most important thing for Bolita now is that she keeps gaining weight!
* Another thing that would be good
to monitor Bolita and all the other animals (especially Lorenzo, Junior)
is to examine their feaces regularly for parasites, for example once every month or two months! Becouse there is no microscope at the park this could be done by making a deal with the vet practice in Santa Maria or the laboratory in Santa Cruz.
Did you know that 50% of the giant anteaters in captivity have parasites, mostly of the type Trichuris- Nematoda. In this way the animals can be treated effectively.
Hopefully this advise will come in handy, please change it again if things are different- keep the blog informed about how she's doing please! Good luck with her, Sara
Buena suerte, Sara
